Killzone Franchise Reportedly Returning After a Decade

Killzone has spent more than a decade on the sidelines while PlayStation built other franchises into major hits. Now, one of Sony’s former flagship shooters could finally be preparing for a comeback. A new report claims an older entry is being revived with help from an outside developer. For longtime gaming fans, that could mean another classic PlayStation series is about to get a second life.

Killzone’s possible return

MP1st reports that work on a new Killzone project has only recently begun, with Guerrilla Games collaborating with an external studio on a remaster or remake. Sources most consistently describe the project as a visual upgrade of an older title, although talk of a larger reboot has also surfaced.

Exactly which game is being revisited remains unknown. The outlet considers the original 2004 Killzone the most logical candidate, though this remains speculation rather than confirmation. Such a choice would be interesting because the first game has already received the remaster treatment. Killzone HD brought the PS2 shooter to PS3 years ago, meaning a new version could represent another attempt to introduce the original adventure to modern players.

Development beyond the original studio

Apparently, the original studio Guerrilla Games will not handle the project alone. MP1st says its information strongly points towards People Can Fly being in charge, but it adds that the studio’s involvement could not be definitively confirmed.

PlayStation and People Can Fly signed an agreement in March 2025 to co-develop Project Delta, which is based on an existing PlayStation property. That connection raises an obvious possibility, but whether Delta is actually Killzone remains unconfirmed.

Bringing in an experienced shooter developer could also allow Guerrilla to divide its resources during game development. From gaming industry innovations to revivals of established franchises, external partnerships have given publishers another way to keep older properties active without placing the entire workload on their original creators.

An almost forgotten franchise

Killzone has not received a proper new entry since Killzone: Shadow Fall launched with the PS4 in 2013. Its multiplayer servers eventually closed in August 2022, while Guerrilla shifted its attention towards Horizon. Art director Roy Postma said in 2024 that Guerrilla had deliberately moved away from Killzone because the team wanted a change after years of its gritty world.

A revival would therefore mark a notable return for the series. Future game reviews will ultimately determine whether it can connect with modern gaming audiences, but after 13 years away, Killzone could become one of PlayStation’s more intriguing top upcoming video game releases if the report proves accurate.

Guerrilla’s development order

Guerrilla’s immediate priority reportedly remains Horizon Hunters Gathering. The multiplayer project was recently said to have undergone major changes following negative feedback, complicating the studio’s production plans. Killzone had apparently been lined up as Guerrilla’s next focus after Hunters Gathering, with some staff allocated to the project. Once work on the Horizon title is completed, part of the team is expected to pivot towards Killzone.

Horizon 3 is also currently expected to come after the reported Killzone project, according to MP1st. Given how early everything is, however, that order could still change. That uncertainty leaves both games among the top upcoming video game releases worth watching rather than projects with firm schedules.
