Sensational! The Cricket World Cup is here and it’s already putting everyone on the edge of their seats in just the first day of the tournament. In the opening game between New Zealand and England, a young Kiwi named Rachin Ravindra just made his debut with a bang after a stellar outing against the defending champs. Who is this Rachin Ravindra and why are cricket fans going wild with his superb World Cup performance?
Who is Rachin Ravindra?
Rachin Ravindra was born on November 18, 1999, in Wellington, New Zealand. Although he is a Kiwi, he was born to Indian parents. Ravindra is of Indian descent and his parents were from Bengaluru (Bangalore), India. When asked about his roots, Ravindra proudly says:
“I am very proud of my roots and ethnicity [but] I completely see myself as a Kiwi.”
His father, Ravi Krishnamurthy, who is an architect, also reportedly played cricket in India. At a very young age, he was already introduced to the sport. Rachin revealed that he was named after two Cricket legends, “Ra” from Rahul Dravid and “Chin” from Sachin Tendulkar. It was mainly due to the fact that his parents were madly in love with cricket at the time he was born. Well, one could say that he was already destined to become a legend himself.
Rachin isn’t just fond of cricket, the youngster is also a huge basketball fan. The 23-year-old wears the no.8 on his jersey as an homage to his favorite basketball player, the late Kobe Bryant. Rachin has been to multiple tournaments and was seen to be the next big thing. Although he just made his World Cup debut this year, Rachin Ravindra has already stepped foot on an international stage two years ago, in September 2021.
Rachin Ravindra’s exceptional World Cup debut turned heads
Ravindra’s debut is more than what New Zealand asked him for. The 23-year-old all-around batter was a replacement for the injured Kane Williamson. However, the rising star made the most of his World Cup opener by making it a very memorable one. In the opening match against England, Rachin Ravindra posted 123 runs in 96 deliveries. He and his teammate Devon Conway (who had 152 runs), managed to beat the defending World Cup champions.
Not only did he get a Century immediately in his debut, but Rachin also makes history as the youngest and fastest New Zealand batter to get 100 runs in the World Cup with just 82 deliveries. Cricket fans and pundits alike are now wondering if Rachin will take his talents to the Indian Premier League next year and which team would likely pick him.
