Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff AKA Scarlet Witch has been a crucial part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since her first appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. Since then, the 34-year-old actress has evolved into a fan favorite. However, a recent development has left Marvel fans concerned that her future in the franchise hangs in the balance. Let’s take a look at the MCU book cover controversy and find out if Elizabeth Olsen is actually leaving Marvel.
Marvel removes Elizabeth Olsen from book cover
There are over 32 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it’s halfway into Phase Five. Fans often have a tough time trying to piece together the overall narrative of the franchise. To help them out, Marvel announced a new book that will make life simpler for its fans.
In 2022, Marvel announced the book titled The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline. The book will untie the MCU’s complex narrative knots of the MCU and unveil the overarching timeline of its universe. The book’s release date is October 24, 2023.

When the book was first announced, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch was featured on the cover. A still from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was used. Now, the cover has been updated and it features Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie.
Other iconic characters on the cover include Iron Man, Shang-Chi, Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Captain Marvel and Thanos. However, none of the others were replaced in the cover except Elizabeth Olsen.
Possible reasons for excluding Elizabeth Olsen
Before we read too much between the lines, the decision could simply be a marketing strategy. Loki’s second season is on its way to Disney+ around the same time as the book’s release in October. The cover will give more visibility to the show.
Furthermore, Scarlet Witch is supposed to be dead in the MCU. However, she is expected to return soon. Towards the end of Multiverse of Madness, she sacrifices herself to bring down Mount Wundagore and destroy all copies of the Darkhold throughout the multiverse.
Outside the big screen, there are some reasons too. Elizabeth Olsen had commented that her commitment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe stopped her from taking critically acclaimed roles. These could have impacted her relationship with the studio heads.
Elizabeth Olsen’s future as Scarlet Witch in the MCU
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had Elizabeth Olsen’s most recent appearance as Scarlet Witch in the MCU. Before that, she had WandaVision, the full-length Disney+ miniseries dedicated to her story and character development in the Multiverse saga.
Elizabeth Olsen will most likely make her MCU comeback with either the second season of Loki or Agatha: Coven of Chaos. Her reality-shifting powers will play a key role in the upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

I hope Marvel Studios' isn't trying to remove Scarlet Witch from the MCU just because of what Elizabeth Olsen said about Marvel a couple months ago because I will freak out pic.twitter.com/8cd5VmrOaL
