Will Jonathan Majors return in the MCU as Kang? | Timeline of controversies

Jonathan Majors Marvel MCU Kang controversy

Jonathan Majors made an explosive entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) but his journey as Kang was short-lived to say the least. The 33-year-old actor was all set to be the MCU’s next best thing and lead the franchise into new multiverses. However, a string of controversies in his personal life that led to his arrest brought his meteoric rise to an abrupt end.

Jonathan Majors portrayed the Kang variant He Who Remains and Kang the Conqueror in the first season of Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. However, the actor faces domestic violence and assault charges and these have raised significant concerns regarding his future. While Marvel Studios and Disney are yet to make a public statement, insider sources suggest that Jonathan Majors’ return to the MCU as Kang is virtually impossible.

The Future of Kang the Conqueror

Simply put, Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror was the next Thanos in the MCU. All the storylines from Phase Five and Six movies and Disney+ series were leading up to a finale with the time-traveling multiverse villain.

In fact, the next Avengers movie features Majors’ character’s name in the title: Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, the actor’s serious allegations have put Disney and Marvel Studios in a difficult position.

The most recent update regarding Jonathan Majors’ future as Kang in the MCU comes from an insider regarding a promotional issue. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is all set to premiere on Disney+ and promotions are in full swing.

However, reports claim that no promotional material or articles should mention Jonathan Majors’ involvement in the film. As an alternative, they should reference Majors and his role as Kang the Conqueror as “the new threat that frightens everyone” as opposed to mentioning the actor and even the character by name.

The Actor’s Physical Assault Controversy

In March, Jonathan Majors was arrested in New York on charges of strangulation, assault, and harassment after a 911 call from the victim. The NYPD reported minor injuries to the victim’s head and neck.

More victims came forward against Majors, collaborating with the Manhattan district attorney’s office.  The US Army and the Texas Rangers dropped him from ad campaigns immediately. As a result, he was also fired from the movie, The Man in My Basement.

Jonathan Majors’ management company and PR representation also terminated their association with him. His lawyer claims his innocence, citing video evidence and witness testimony. Some text messages also suggest the victim took responsibility for the incident.

What are Marvel’s options to handle the issue?

When it comes to such controversies, a recast is never out of the equation. However, it could be difficult in Jonathan Majors’ case as Kang appears in multiple variations in the MCU. They could use this to their advantage claiming that there’s a new Kang variant that looks different and is more powerful.

Marvel has often recast actors for practical and controversial reasons. However, the issue seems to be far more serious this time. Even if Jonathan Majors is proven innocent in court, it’s highly unlikely that he will repair his broken image quickly enough for the MCU’s timeline.
