Nintendo is a giant in the video game console industry and has been present in the market since the 70’s. However, at this moment they are totally focused on the handheld/hybrid space with their hit device Switch. They have not produced a single dedicated home console since the Wii in 2006. But, with rumors of a new console launch, it is possible that Nintendo could bring back the Game Cube and release an updated version of it. While most leaks speculate a Switch 2 release, some of them also hints at a new home console system. Everything could be unveiled at the Nintendo Direct held on September 1 to 4, 2023. But first, let’s take a look at what could happen if they decide to release a new Game Cube console with modern hardware specifications.
What happens if Nintendo releases an improved Game Cube?
Competition to Sony and Microsoft
With a next-gen Game Cube release, Nintendo could provide direct competition to Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S just like it did in the old days. Discontinuation of PSP from Sony and no device in production by Microsoft means Nintendo’s only competitor in the handheld market is Valve’s Steam Deck. We will have to see the approach Nintendo takes if it decides to get out of its comfort zone after all these years.
- It certainly will be tough, as besides original licensed IPs, they will also need fresh and compelling third-party exclusive titles.
- We can also account in the headstart that their competitors have been making the next-gen consoles for the past 3 years.
- However, this new competition can be excellent for gamers as they would see more new and innovative games coming out.
Improvement in quality of Licensed games
While Nintendo is capable of making GOTY-worthy games with limited hardware specs, with a next-gen home console that won’t be a restriction anymore.
- The Pokemon franchise has potential to be one of the best open world games on a next-gen home console if done right.
- With improved computing powers, Nintendo can deliver both graphical fidelity and large scale within their games.
- Their reputation should also allow them the attention of development studios who would exclusively want to make games for the console.
Backwards Compatibility
Nintendo can take the same route as Microsoft and integrate backwards compatibility for old Game Cube and Wii titles. This would capitalize on the nostalgia factor and might motivate the old fans to buy the new device. This is especially true when we look at the library of classics available at their disposal.
Appeal to Hardcore Gamers
A next-gen Game Cube can bring about an influx of new audiences into the company. The Switch’s target audience have been casual gamers who primarily plays titles Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Mario Kart.
The new powerful home console can mark a change where it would also cater to hardcore gamers with bigger and better titles that they would play on monitors or TVs rather than on their bed.
