After Rockstar Games officially announced the next instalment of the Grand Theft Auto franchise: GTA VI, gamers all around the world have been anticipating its release like a hungry pack of wolves eyeing a juicy steak (which, by the way, includes me too). Rockstar Games never disappointed us, so it’s only natural to be this eager for GTA VI’s release. But why wait for your crush to text you back when you can already slide into someone else’s DMs? What I mean is, how about we explore other games to play while waiting for GTA VI?
5. Just Cause 3
Just Cause 3 is all about top-notch action and explosions. The playable character Rico Rodriguez is a secret agent who is sent to a fictional Mediterranean island to overthrow a dictator. With a focus on wing suiting and parachuting, Just Cause 3 offers a very entertaining, unique gameplay experience. It is similar to GTA games in terms of its open-world gameplay, and its action element is somewhat similar to what you can see in modern GTA games like GTA V.
4. Far Cry 5
Far Cry 5 combines open-world exploration with first-person shooting as you get to play a deputy sheriff sent to take down a violent religious cult in Montana. With an emphasis on combat, exploration, and stunning visuals, it’s a must-play similar to GTA with its vast open-world, side missions, vehicles, weapons, gunplay, and explosive action.
3. Mafia III
Mafia III has a serious and mature storyline compared to GTA, set in a fictional New Orleans in the 1960s, where you play as a Vietnam War veteran who takes down the Italian Mafia with stealth and combat. While GTA emphasizes satire and parody of American culture, Mafia III focuses on organized crime. However, it’s still similar to GTA with its open world, vehicles, guns, side missions, and activities.
2. Sleeping Dogs
Sleeping Dogs, too, offers a similar gameplay style to GTA. However, it has a different setting and story. The game is set in Hong Kong and features a compelling storyline. You play as an undercover cop named Wei Shen, who is tasked to infiltrate the Triads to take them down. With a focus on hand-to-hand combat (not seen in many modern games), Sleeping Dogs offers an exciting and challenging unique experience.
1. Red Dead Redemption 2
Set in the Wild West, this open-world game offers a similar gameplay style to GTA but with a different setting and storyline. You play as Arthur Morgan, a member of the Van der Linde gang. They navigate their way through a changing world filled with rival gangs, corrupt officials, and dangerous animals. With stunning graphics, an emotionally engaging storyline, and plenty of side missions o keep you busy, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a must-play for any GTA fan.
These were some of the best games to play while waiting for GTA VI, ranked by similarity to the popular series. Keeping in mind that GTA VI has not been released yet, we can’t really know the similarities between these games. The games on this list share some similarities with the GTA franchise but not GTA VI itself. Which one will you be playing?
