The first trailer for the last film in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy was released recently, giving more insight into its story. We have one of the first looks at the story’s villain, High Evolutionary. It seems he has a direct connection to Rocket Raccoon, whose story will be a big part of the film’s plot. Here’s what we know about him and why he’s considered a powerful villain in the MCU.
High Evolutionary – An Overview
High Evolutionary made his comics debut in 1966 as a villain of Thor. His real name is Herbert Edgar Wyndham, who became obsessed with accelerating humanity’s evolution. While we won’t likely get the same comic version as the one in the MCU, some concepts may be similar. The actor portraying him is Chukwudi Iwuji, best known for his work in Peacemaker.

So why is High Evolutionary considered a threat? He first used his capabilities to boost his intelligence the highest way possible. He has mastery over different sciences and has experimented with the evolution and devolution of beings. With his experiments, he increased his strength, gained psionic powers, and even influences reality to a degree. He even built a suit that provides regeneration.
Possible Connections
High Evolutionary has deep connections to Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch. They established that he was one responsible for giving the Maximoff siblings powers. However, this era of comics was back when Marvel tried to distance itself from the X-Men since the license was back in Fox’s hands. With Marvel more open now and the continuous teases we’ve been having, they’re likely to reference some more mutants in the film.
High Evolutionary takes inspiration from Mister Sinister, a mutant geneticist and X-Men villain. He also has a deep connection to Mount Wundagore, which we saw during Multiverse of Madness. According to the story, he created the Knights of Wundagore, which would guard Chthon’s prison there. There are also possible references to Werewolf by Night, and Spider-Woman. He’s had comics involving them, but we don’t know which direction the film will take.
Counter-Earth
Early in the trailer, we see the Guardians visiting what looks like Earth, only to find that the inhabitants inside are much different. It refers to the High Evolutionary’s signature creation Counter-Earth, a replica of our planet. He uses Counter-Earth to conduct his experiments far from the scrutiny of other eyes.
He has a deep connection to Adam Warlock, teased at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. However, since the infinity stones are no longer in play, the way they use Adam in this storyline may differ from the comics.
There was also a version of High Evolutionary that had more cosmic powers. Since we’re dealing with a Guardians film, there is a possibility that they may put his strength at that level, and our heroes must overcome him.
