Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from their royal roles two years ago. Shortly after, the couple signed a deal with Netflix for a documentary series on their lives. This week, Netflix released the first three episodes from the series titled “Harry & Meghan”.
The documentary’s trailer was a subject of major controversy in Britain as people were not pleased about the royal family’s private lives being revealed.
What is “Harry & Meghan” about?
In the documentary, Prince Harry and Meghan talk about the “unconscious bias” that runs inside the royal family. They cite it as a reason for leaving the monarchy.
- The docu-series covers topics like how Harry and Meghan first met, Meghan’s brief experience inside the Royal family, the issue with British media, and the death of Harry’s mother, Princess Diana.
Harry attacks Britain’s tabloids
The first episode mainly attacks the negative effect of Britain’s news media on the royal family, especially Harry since his childhood.
- They pursued his mother Diana in the 1990s, which damaged her significantly. After all, she died in a car crash in 1997 after being chased by paparazzi.

- Photographers tailed and harassed Harry’s friends and girlfriends from a young age. This carried on even after Harry’s marriage to Meghan.
- Harry and Meghan are staunch enemies of Britain’s tabloid culture. In fact, they have taken legal action against British news media outlets for violating their privacy.
What Harry said about Diana
Prince Harry claims in the docu-series to see “a bit of his mother Diana in Meghan Markle.” He compares a lot of positive qualities that both Diana and Meghan share.
- This was also why he was scared when the media harassed Meghan and intruded into their personal lives.

- Prince Harry also sees himself continuing his mother Diana’s legacy in terms of philanthropy and social work. He believes that he could carry on his mother’s work alongside his wife Meghan Markle.
Royal family’s bias towards Meghan
This is not the first time that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have consciously talked about the royal family in a public space. In 2021, the couple’s interview with Oprah Winfrey focused on the royal family.
- In the interview, Harry felt he was “really let down” by his father Charles for his lack of support. King Charles III did not take Harry and Meghan’s side when they denounced their official roles.
- Meghan also claimed that the royal family had discussions about “how dark” the color of their first child’s skin might be when she was expecting. This caused outrage and debate on social media.
- In the Netflix release, Prince Harry thinks that his family did not understand the importance of Meghan’s race in how she was treated by them.
The docu-series and its disclaimer
Directed by Academy Award nominee Liz Garbus, “Harry and Meghan” has been one of the most anticipated media events of the year.
“We are grateful to have the ability to share our love story through such an esteemed creative team and with the global reach of Netflix,” say Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex. “We hope it helps others to heal, and to feel inspired.”#HarryandMeghanonNetflix pic.twitter.com/Pw6vqz82qp

- The docu-series starts with an interesting disclaimer about the authenticity of Harry and Meghan’s story. It goes on to add that “members of the royal family declined to comment on the content within this series.”
- The documentary was filmed before the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September. As things stand at Buckingham Palace today, King Charles III is scheduled to be crowned next May.
Meghan’s positive memories
The Netflix documentary is not entirely negative as Harry and Meghan share a lot of positive experiences as well. The couple made a cute revelation on screen that they first met on Instagram through a mutual friend.
The final three episodes of the docuseries will showcase Harry and Meghan’s wedding and their departure from the royal family. Netflix will release these episodes on December 15. Are you looking forward to it?
