With news of Jim Ryan’s retirement catching us all off guard, one question remains: who will replace him, and how well will they be able to perform as PlayStation CEO? Let’s get to know the interim CEO and potential candidates who can take on this big responsibility.
Why is PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan retiring?
The future still looks bright for PlayStation with the games they are planning to release in the coming months, so what prompted Jim Ryan to make the decision to retire? Ryan has released a statement regarding the announcement, citing that the biggest factor that contributed to this decision is being able to spend more time at home. Since Ryan is from Europe and the PlayStation HQ is in California, the CEO often runs into trouble balancing and managing his time.

Although there are talks that he was axed from the company, the published statement shows that PlayStation received Jim Ryan’s retirement wholeheartedly. Despite his shortcomings in the previous years as PlayStation CEO, it’s undeniable that Ryan played a huge part in making the PlayStation brand as big as it is today. From what we can tell, it’s possible that Ryan has finally achieved all his goals in the company and feels that this is the perfect time for him to step down and be away from the spotlight so he can spend more time with his family.

Who will replace Jim Ryan?
With PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan retiring in March 2024, who will be qualified enough to fill his shoes and bring the PlayStation to a whole other level? As revealed in his statement, Ryan will still be President and CEO until March 2024. Come April 2024, Hiroki Totoki will step in to temporarily take over.
As mentioned in the press release, I will continue my role as President and CEO until March 2024. Effective April 1, 2024, Hiroki Totoki will be appointed Interim CEO of SIE while he continues his current role at Sony Group Corporation.
Though his role as CEO may be temporary, it’s quite obvious that Sony might be considering Totoki for the full-time role. However, this is a decision that not all fans agree with. Based on the reactions to Jim Ryan retiring, there seem to be other candidates whom Sony should consider as Ryan’s replacement.
Jim Ryan has been a great contributor to our industry and a fierce leader for PlayStation. I wish him the best in what he does next. Thank you for all you’ve done for the community over the last 30 years, Jim.

Some of the top candidates we believe can keep the momentum going are the following:
- Shuhei Yoshida
- Hermen Hulst
- Mark Cerny
Shuhei Yoshida
One of the top candidates to replace Jim Ryan is Shuhei Yoshida, the head of SIE’s Independent Developer Initiative or PlayStation Indies. The work he’s done to provide exposure and transform the video gaming landscape with indie titles is an incredible feat in itself. Something many people can agree on is the fact that Yoshida is a legend in the industry.
With his passion for bringing indie games forward and giving them the platform they deserve, it won’t be a surprise if more and more ideas from independent developers are brought to life if Yoshida does become the new PlayStation CEO.
Hermen Hulst
The former studio head of Guerilla Games is also a suitable candidate to take on the mantle of PlayStation CEO once Jim Ryan successfully retires. Hermen Hulst is known for being passionate about gaming, so pair that with his experience as head of Guerilla Games and being the president of PlayStation Studios, we’ve got ourselves a very qualified CEO.
Mark Cerny
The final top candidate on our list is Mark Cerny, the brains behind the PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 hardware. He’s also known for being the genius who decided to have a built-in SSD to improve the PlayStation 5’s performance when running games. Having someone at the helm with extensive knowledge about how the PlayStation consoles work would be more than beneficial to the company.

On the other hand, if he isn’t offered the position, Sony should do everything they can to keep Cerny. Admittedly, his ideas revolutionized gaming as we know it.
