PS5 Beats PS4 Sales in China Despite Limited Supplies

Playstation 5 - Consoles

After Sony released the PS5 last November 2020, it was no surprise that it didn’t surpass PS4 sales. However, the recent Sony investor presentation revealed that sales for the PS5 actually beat PS4 sales in China despite limited supplies. Read on to find out more.

China is now the 6th best-selling country for PS5 units

During the Sony investor presentation, the Game & Network Services Segment of Sony revealed the sales for Week 72 of the PS5 in China. Moreover, they compared it to the sales of the PS4 within the same timeframe. According to Sony, this was an “unprecedented” demand from China since they undersold in the country when they first released the PS4.

The data also shows that despite the PS5 having a constrained supply, it beat PS4 sales by almost three times. Now, China moved up 5 spots in Sony’s active console volume ranking.

Another interesting detail from Sony is Brazil does not make it to the top 11 countries for PS5 users. Before, they were the 8th best-selling country for PS4. But of course, this is most probably because of the lack of supplies.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan also brought up the COVID-19 lockdowns in China. According to Ryan, even though there is uncertainty with supply chains, things are looking up for Sony and the PS5.

Sony’s initiatives to expand its audience reach will greatly affect their game portfolio

More information from the Sony investor presentation touched on Sony’s plans for the future. With the trend of mobile gaming rising in the past years, it’s no surprise that Sony is tapping into the mobile gaming market.

Not only that, Sony is also looking into releasing PlayStation IPs to both PC and mobile. According to them, half of their releases in 2025 will be made up of PC and mobile games. Moreover, CEO Jim Ryan also talked about live service games being made more available this time as Sony plans on expanding its audience.

This may be because of the rising trend of players choosing to spend more money on free-to-play games. Games like Genshin Impact are successful in being a free-to-play game while still incorporating in-game purchases.

In the investor presentation, CEO Jim Ryan also mentioned that if they execute these initiatives properly, then it would provide a large growth for the company.

According to Ryan, “if we execute with intelligence and we execute with excellence, the opportunities for significant growth in the number of people who play our games, the number of people who enjoy our games, and the number of people who spend money on our games, is exponentially a large one.”
