The next installment related to the Conjuring Universe won’t be a fourth Conjuring movie. Although a lot of horror fans have been expecting The Conjuring: Chapter 4 after the third chapter called The Devil Made Me Do It released in 2021, it won’t be getting the continuation. Instead of a fourth movie highlighting the adventures of Ed and Lorraine Warren, we will be getting The Nun 2. This will be the second film revolving around Valak, the main antagonist in The Nun released in 2018. Even though this isn’t The Conjuring: Chapter 4, we highly recommend you watch the films in the Conjuring Universe.
Similar to the vast Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the Conjuring Universe has taken a life of its own after the titles gained popularity. You can freely watch the movies in whatever order you want, that’s your choice. But if you really want to prep yourself for when The Nun 2 comes out, you may want to consider watching the Conjuring movies in this order. Of course, we’re not only including the ones with “Conjuring” in their title. You should also check out the other films to get a grasp of what the stories in the films are trying to convey.
Will we be getting The Conjuring: Chapter 4 anytime soon?
Unfortunately for fans who are anticipating a new Conjuring movie, we won’t be getting The Conjuring: Chapter 4 anytime soon. The first movie in the series was released in 2013 and the second chapter followed three years later. As for the third chapter, this was the most recent release in the Conjuring Universe.
- Released in 2021, The Devil Made Me Do It takes us back to a case in the 80s.
- The film’s story is also based on the real-life case of Arne Cheyenne Johnson after he is charged with the murder of his landlord.
- Johnson claims that the reason he murdered his landlord is because of a “demonic possession”
How did the case get to the infamous Warrens? Well, they believed that after exorcising a demon out from a young boy’s body, this demon then possessed Johnson next.
Since this is the latest installment in the Conjuring series, it will be a while until we get the fourth chapter. But it doesn’t mean we’re not getting a movie at all.
The Nun 2 is the next installment in the Conjuring Universe
This film will serve as the sequel to The Nun which was released back in 2018. If you’re still unfamiliar with this film, we’ll give you a name: Valak. Ring a bell yet? This is the nun that terrorizes the Warrens in The Conjuring 2 which was available in 2016. It got its stand-alone film in 2018 where we had a chance to see more of the demonic nun’s origin story.
- The Nun 2 will have Sister Irene fighting against Valak again
- Although there aren’t more details released about the upcoming movie, it’s likely they’ll use this opportunity to connect Valak to the original story in the Conjuring movies
- In The Conjuring 2, the movie doesn’t shed too much light on Valak’s history
What will The Nun 2 be about?
Sister Irene is the main protagonist in the first film of The Nun. Here, she makes her way over to a Romanian monastery with Father Burke. The reason for their visit is to find out what happened with a nun who supposedly killed herself.
It turns out that the reason why this is happening is all because of a demon named Valak. This demon possesses those in the monastery and drives them to do these things to themselves. Of course, we won’t reveal too much information about what happens in The Nun, but essentially, Sister Irene isn’t successful in fully defeating Valak.
Based on that alone, it’s likely that Valak is out on a mission to completely destroy Sister Irene once and for all. What we do know is The Nun 2 will take place in France four years after the events in the first movie. This time, Sister Irene needs to stop Valak as the demon may be responsible for the murder of a priest in France.
The Nun 2 is set to release on September 8, 2023.
How to watch the Conjuring Universe movies in order
So far, there are eight movies belonging to the Conjuring Universe. Somehow and someway, these films are connected and you may want to watch them in a specific order. The most common order to watch these films is by the date they were released. But if you’re a hardcore fan of this movie franchise or you’re dipping your toes in the horror genre of films, you’ll want to take a whole other approach to this.
Before we get into that, here’s the order of the Conjuring movies according to when they were released:
- The Conjuring (2013)
- Annabelle (2014)
- The Conjuring 2 (2016)
- Annabelle: Creation (2017)
- The Nun (2018)
- The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
- Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
- The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
Now if you’re looking to take things to another level and piece things together, here’s how to watch the movies in chronological order:
- The Nun (2018)
- Annabelle: Creation (2017)
- Annabelle (2014)
- The Conjuring (2013)
- Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
- The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
- The Conjuring 2 (2016)
- The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
Why should I watch the movies in chronological order?
Nothing and no one is stopping you from watching the movies in the Conjuring Universe in whatever order you desire. But like we said, this is just like the MCU but with horror films. If you really want to get into the franchise’s story and connect the dots, you’ll want to watch them in chronological order.
You’ll also get to understand some of the references made in films that take place in a future setting. Just take a look at the Annabelle movies, for instance. The first Annabelle movie was released in 2014, but then we get Annabelle: Creation in 2017.
This is a prequel to the film released in 2014 and we get to find out why Annabelle became the demonic doll that she is now. There are also a couple of easter eggs in the film which include other figures in the Conjuring Universe like Valak.
Do I need to watch the previous chapters before watching the latest movie in the Conjuring Universe?
It’s not required but as we’ve been saying, we recommend you watch the other films first before watching the latest Conjuring movie. You’ll want to get a background first on the couple that started it all: Ed and Lorraine Warren.
At the end of the day, it’s still your choice whether you’ll watch the previous chapters in a particular order. The good thing about films in this franchise is that they each have their unique story. If you want to start with the latest movie, The Devil Made Me Do It, you won’t have a hard time understanding the story.
