The game of basketball has changed in so many ways since it was invented. James Naismith started something in 1891 that would eventually become one of the most beloved sports all over the world. Today, the NBA is commanded by fast-paced gameplay, and most shots are now coming from the three-point line. New talents are emerging each year and current players are also getting better. As we see great players come every season, we are ranking 5 of the greatest point guards in the NBA today and why they are the best.
5. Ja Morant (Memphis Grizzlies)
Just in his 4th year, but Ja Morant has already achieved many accolades to add to his resume. The 2020 Rookie of the Year has been named an All-Star twice since joining the league, and he is not yet finished. At the age of 23, though he is not yet in his prime, he already looks like a superstar point guard out there every night.
In the 2022-2023 season, he averaged 26.2 points, 8.1 assists, and 5.9 rebounds. His numbers are not just for the All-Star, but also All-NBA worthy. Just after only playing four seasons, he has already been compared to a Hall-of-Famer, Allen Iverson. He has jaw-dropping athleticism, the ability to score the basket, and the will to lead a team. In addition to that, he has been leading the Memphis Grizzlies to the top of the Western Conference each year.
Ja is relatively young and is still showing signs of some weak spots. Further, he has been making a lot of bad decisions recently, which included some assault charges and many more. But, overall, he definitely looks like a future superstar point guard. The future solid cornerstone of the Memphis Grizzlies.
4. Damian Lillard (Portland Trailblazers)
For many years now, Damian Lillard has always been one of the best point guards in the league. Although, his team is struggling and is not looking tight without him due to an injury. For years, he has been the franchise player for the Trailblazers. Consistently leading Rip City to a playoff spot for 8 straight years (2014-2021).

He and Steph Curry are two prominent names when it comes to guys who excel at shooting 30 or 40-footer threes. They make shooting from the logo and the half-court look easy. Dame Time has a career average of 25 points per game while making 37% from the trifecta. This season, he is also havering a career year with a scoring average of 32.2 points a night. However, the Portland Trailblazers are struggling to land a perennial superstar to pair with Dame.
3. Kyrie Irving
Putting all the hate aside, if you come to think of it, Kyrie Irving is definitely a top 3 point guard in the league as of today.
Although he’s only played 60 games this season – mostly because of Kyrie’s off-court issues – Kyrie has proven he is still the Uncle Drew we remember. Ankle-breaking crossovers, flashy layups, unstoppable jump shots, and acrobatic finishes, you name it and Kyrie Irving can do it all. This season, he posted 27.1 points, 5.3 assists, and 5.1 rebounds. Truly, he has returned to his All-Star form and the 31-year-old star could be part of another championship squad once again.
He will become a free agent in the 2023 offseason, and rumors are already spreading that Kyrie may join LeBron James in Los Angeles or Kevin Durant in Phoenix.
2. Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks)
Luka Doncic a.k.a Luka Magic has been a phenomenal basketball player ever since he was drafted. Breaking records, after records, after records.
The 24-year-old is already a four-time all-star and was an all-NBA team member three times in his career. Luka has a great basketball IQ and court vision, which makes him an excellent point guard. Also, the Dallas Mavericks can count on him to produce consistent numbers each night. He even makes triple-doubles like a piece of cake. He is considered the second-best point guard in the NBA mainly because of how he performs and his production. Despite failing to capture a spot in the 2023 Playoffs, Luka has been a monster on the offensive. He tallied an almost 30-point triple-double average of 32.4 points, 8.0 assists, and 8.6 rebounds in 66 games. This brings us to the question, could Luka Doncic be the next LeBron James?
1. Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors)
There is no question that Steph Curry is still the undisputed best point guard in the league today. He even is up there as the best point guard of all time, but that is for another topic.
Steph changed the game. Period. The 2016 unanimous MVP changed the landscape of the NBA by a landslide. He’s the greatest shooter of all time, but his playmaking ability is often overshadowed by his scoring ability. As the Golden State Warriors’ best player and scorer, Curry can either play off the ball or be the main ball handler. Even at 35 years old, Steph Curry is still the biggest threat to opposing teams. Truly, after all these years, it seems that no one has him figured out yet.
