Unbelievable Story: K-pop group B.A.P’s First MAMA Trophy ends up sold in the Philippines

The K-Pop industry has taken the world by storm in the past decade. Groups like BTS and BLACKPINK reaching global popularity and breaking records left and right. But before these groups, others were running to become another K-pop global sensation, none other than TS Entertainment’s former group, B.A.P. In 2012, the K-pop group B.A.P. received its first Mnet Music Asian Awards (MAMA) trophy, and it ended up in the Philippines.

Formed in 2012, B.A.P. quickly made a name for themselves in the K-Pop industry with their powerful debut single “Warrior”. The group’s dedicated fanbase resulted from their unique sound and impressive performances, and they earned numerous award nominations in their debut year alone.

B.A.P.’s MAMA trophy found in the Philippines

The legacy of B.A.P. and their achievements in the early days of K-Pop live on, even as the group has since disbanded. This makes it shocking to see their MAMA award trophy sold at a thrift store or ‘ukay-ukay’ in the Philippines.

  • The current owner of the trophy, a Filipino K-Pop fan, was unaware of the significance of the award when they first received it as a gift from their mother. They shared this on a now-deleted TikTok video.
  • Only later, after discovering the world of K-Pop and learning about B.A.P., they realized what a valuable piece of history they had in their possession. The news already reached several media websites and forums.

The outrage of B.A.P.’s fans

Fans of B.A.P. and K-Pop, in general, are outraged that such an important trophy could end up in a thrift store. They’re left wondering how and why it ended up there, and who could have possibly sold it.

  • If we’re not mistaken, the K-pop companies or agencies keep the artists’ awards and trophies. And if we’re thoroughly thinking about this through, it could be TS Entertainment to blame for the trophy situation right now.

Looking back at B.A.P.’s legacy

If you’re a fan of K-pop, then chances are you’ve heard of B.A.P. But for those new to the genre, let’s take a closer look at this iconic group.

  • B.A.P. (which stands for Best Absolute Perfect) was a South Korean boy group that debuted in 2012. The group consisted of six members: Yongguk, Himchan, Daehyun, Youngjae, Jongup, and Zelo. Right from the start, B.A.P. stood out in the crowded K-pop scene with its unique blend of hip-hop, rock, and electronic music.
  • By the end of 2012, B.A.P. received numerous award nominations. One of these awards was from the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), one of the biggest award ceremonies in the K-Pop industry. B.A.P. won the award for Best New Male Artist in 2012, solidifying their status as one of the rising stars in K-Pop.

The lawsuit: B.A.P. against TS Entertainment

But their success was not without its challenges. In 2014, the group found themselves in a difficult situation. They sued their agency, TS Entertainment, for unfair working conditions and profit distribution. B.A.P. made a bold move by filing the lawsuit, risking their careers, but they were determined to fight for what they believed was right.

  • The lawsuit dragged on for months, and the group’s future was uncertain. Despite this, B.A.P. continued to release music and go on tours. While their legal battle against the company played out in the background.
  • In 2015, they settled the lawsuit, and B.A.P. members were able to move on and continue their careers. Unfortunately, in 2019, B.A.P. announced that they would be disbanding after seven years together.

Even though they are no longer active as a group, B.A.P.’s impact on K-pop cannot be understated. They were pioneers in the genre, breaking new ground with their music and performances.

B.A.P. and their contributions to the industry remain unforgettable. Even as time passes and groups come and go, acknowledging their legacy in the K-pop industry.
