2022 might be the year of revelations, and we are all going crazy about it. A year ago, the 2020 hit role-playing video game, Ghost of Tsushima, was announced to be getting its movie adaptation. After Sucker Punch productions gathered massive success with the title, Sony wants to take it to the next level by crafting a live-action adaptation. In this article, we will be showing you all the details about the movie we know so far.
Ghost of Tsushima is an action/survival RPG set in a haunting but different version of feudal Japan. It was first released on July 17, 2020, and already sold almost 10 million copies worldwide.
Ghost of Tsushima (Jin Sakai) lead actor candidates
Those who have played the game know that the man of the hour was Jin Sakai. Jin, a fictional character based on some of the legendary samurais of Japan, will be the lead character of the film, as it was in the source material. There is no official news on who the actor will be portraying the epic warrior, but, there’s someone who seems to be eyeing the major role.

Andrew Koji, famously known for his portrayal of Tommy Storm a.k.a. Storm Shadow (from the G.I. Joe spinoff, Snake Eyes) is reportedly interested in the role. Koji, who is now 34 years old, said during an interview that he would be a perfect fit for the role. He also added that he has already played the game twice, making him more familiar not just with the role, but with the whole concept. Koji, a British actor of Japanese descent made his breakout role in the 2019 Cinemax series called Warrior. His most recent role was an assassin in Bullet Train starring Brad Pitt and Bad Bunny.
However, there are also some notable actors who we think would fit the shoes of Jin Sakai. Some of whom are the following:
1. Daisuke Tsuji

Wouldn’t it be jaw-droppingly awesome if the guy behind the character in the videogame will reprise his role in the movie adaptation? Well, the doors aren’t closed yet for Daisuke Tsuji as he could potentially portray Jin Sakai once again. This time, on the silver screen.
2. Hiroyuki Sanada

Probably the most sought-after Japanese actor when it comes to playing a samurai is no other than the veteran actor and martial artist, Hiroyuki Sanada. He has been in a lot of samurai movies or various films where he played either a samurai or a sword-wielding warrior. Sanada became known due to his parts in The Last Samurai, 47 Ronin, The Twilight Samurai, Mortal Kombat (2021), and many more.
It would also help that his resemblance to Jin Sakai is uncanny. Sakai was not molded from the image and likeness of Sanada, but he would be a fantastic fit for the role in the future.
The Showrunners and The Cast
As previously announced, the film will be spearheaded by director Chad Stahelski. Stahelski was also the man responsible for the neo-noir action film, John Wick, which will be getting a few more sequels and spinoffs in the future. During his interview with Collider, Stahelski shared that he specifically wants the movie to be spoken in Japanese and wants an all-Japanese cast. While this may sound a bit risky, Sony is reportedly supporting the director’s idea.
With that being said, we might just be in it for another authentic Japanese movie experience. However, the people behind the show aren’t sharing anything with the public at, the moment. Thus, fans might have to take this with a pinch of salt. To add, the storyline will be written by Takashi Doscher, a Japanese writer famously known for his works like the sci-fi romance ‘Only’ and the monster movie ‘Blue’.
Release Date
Sorry Ghost of Tsushima fans, but you just might have to wait a bit longer. Although the movie is already in development, there’s no news yet if it has already started filming. Top that with Stahelski getting his plates full of projects with an upcoming John Wick installment (John Wick 4), it would be safe to say that we’ll be getting the Ghost of Tsushima maybe in a couple of years. The most probable date could be sometime in 2024.

The Plot
It wouldn’t be a Ghost of Tsushima adaptation without the main protagonist, Jin Sakai. The story of the movie will revolve around Jin’s epic journey to fight off Mongols during the Mongolian invasion of feudal Japan.

He will be fighting together with some of the best swordmasters in the Genkai Sea in northern Kyushu, Japan. Alongside other master samurais, Jin must survive and improve his way of fighting. He must do all these to free his nation from the hands of the sinister and vile Mongols.
Ghost of Tsushima hitting the big screen is just part of Sony and PlayStation’s plans to create live-action adaptations of their best-selling titles.
HBO’s The Last of Us starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey is already on its way but that’s not all. Sony Interactive Entertainment also announced earlier this year that three (3) of their top games will be getting a TV debut very soon.
Sony IR – 3 positives in the presentation 1) Horizon (Netflix), God of War (Amazon) and Gran Turismo in TV development 2) 2 live service games coming in FY3/23 are not Destiny and 3) PC gaming revenues will surge 3.8x in FY3/23 (which I think relates to live service games) #sony

The titles include Horizon (Horizon: Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West), Gran Turismo, and the most anticipated of them all, God of War. There have been no official release dates for the following shows yet. In addition to that, these shows will also be getting exclusive releases on various streaming platforms. This will include Netflix, HBO, and/or Amazon Prime Video.
