Hogwarts Legacy: Are there any returning familiar characters?

Over the years, the Harry Potter Universe has introduced to us plenty of characters we’ve grown to either love or hate. Now that Hogwarts Legacy is set to release early next year, die-hard fans of Harry Potter have one question: will there be any familiar characters returning for Hogwarts Legacy? Here are all the familiar faces that are making an appearance in the upcoming game from Portkey Games!

There’s still time for Hogwarts Legacy to expand the list of characters appearing in the game. With the reveal trailers we’ve gotten so far, we were able to spot a few familiar characters either in the background or having a role in the game.

Familiar characters returning in Hogwarts Legacy

It’s important to keep in mind that the game is set in the 1890s. This means that most of the characters we met through the Harry Potter books and films won’t be part of the game. However, the lengthy gameplay trailer for Hogwarts Legacy released several months ago shows us a few familiar faces.

1. Nearly Headless Nick

This character is possibly one of the most iconic figures in the Harry Potter franchise. Nearly Headless Nick’s real name is Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington and he passed away in 1492. Since the game is set sometime in 1890, it would only make sense for this ghost to already be roaming the halls of Hogwarts.

Nearly Headless Nick got his nickname after an improper decapitation following Nick giving Ladry Grieve tusks instead of straightening her teeth. This ghost is first introduced to us in the Philosopher’s Stone. He actively floats around Gryffindor Tower and sometimes appears near the mess hall.

Aside from appearing in the Harry Potter books and films, Nearly Headless Nick also has roles in the games. It would be interesting to see what role Nearly Headless Nick plays in Hogwarts Legacy.

2. Professor Cuthbert Binns

Unlike Nearly Headless Nick, this character never appeared in the Harry Potter movies. For those of you who have read the books, Professor Cuthbert Binns is always mentioned there. Like Nick, he is a ghost whose spirit resides in Hogwarts now.

Professor Cuthbert Binns still teaches despite having passed on, and his subject is the History of Magic. In the books, he also managed to teach Harry Potter’s batch about the subject. Binns died after falling asleep in the staff room, most probably because of his old age.

Maybe Hogwarts Legacy will shed more light on Binns’ backstory and why he chose to keep on teaching despite having passed on.

3. The Fat Lady

The Fat Lady is the woman inside a portrait guarding the entrance to Gryffindor Tower. Aside from being in the books, she is also seen in the Harry Potter movies. All she does is ask for the password from students to know whether she should let them in or not.

In Hogwarts Legacy, she is already in her portrait so it’s safe to assume that she died in the early 1800s. Despite the fact that she is a figure in a portrait, The Fat Lady can still be affected by emotions.

This was made evident when Sirius Black attacked her portrait after she refused to let him in. After that incident, it took a while before The Fat Lady guarded the entrance to Gryffindor Tower.

4. Peeves

Although Peeves had his own actor for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, his scenes were not included in the final cut of the movie. It’s a good thing that Peeves is finally getting some screentime in Hogwarts Legacy. If you’ve read the book, you know that Peeves is a mischievous poltergeist who likes getting up to no good.

He also played a part in opposing Dolores Umbridge when she took over Hogwarts. In the books, it’s revealed that Peeves would pull all these pranks on her until Umbridge finally left Hogwarts. The books also reveal that Peeves participated in the Battle of Hogwarts against Lord Voldemort.

In the game, Peeves is seen wearing a colorful ensemble but it’s unclear what kind of role he’ll play in the game. Nonetheless, it’s looking like Peeves will still be up to no good in Hogwarts Legacy.

5. Members of the Weasley family

If you were hoping for Ron, Fred, George, or even Ginny to appear in the game, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it’s impossible for any of these characters to be part of Hogwarts Legacy. Avalanche Software, the developer of Hogwarts Legacy, has teased that we may run into a few members of the Weasley family in the game.

In the game’s official blog post for PlayStation, Chandler Wood (community manager for Hogwarts Legacy) hints at this happening:

there’s no shortage of friendly faces to provide a helping hand or a welcome distraction. You may even come across some familiar names, like a Weasley or two.

It would only make sense that the Weasleys are part of Hogwarts Legacy. For Harry Potter fans, it’s no secret that this family is one of the most prominent wizarding families in Great Britain. As for what role they may play in Hogwarts Legacy, there are a couple of possibilities:

  • We meet some of Arthur Weasley’s ancestors and befriend them
  • If they don’t physically appear in the game, there’s a chance that we may only come across the Weasleys in texts or through in-game dialogue

Hogwarts Legacy is a perfect way to establish a story before Harry Potter

Since the books and films focused on the story of Harry Potter through the years, it will be interesting to see how Hogwarts Legacy establishes a story before everything else. The game will definitely be a refreshing experience for Harry Potter fans because of the new characters we’ll meet.

The premise of Hogwarts Legacy also focuses on the Goblin Rebellion. Your character plays an important part in uncovering the truth behind an “ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart.”

The game is expected to release on February 7, 2023, for those who pre-ordered it. Hogwarts Legacy is available on the PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Windows, and the Nintendo Switch.
