The show’s renewal was almost inevitable, given how successful its past two seasons were. Season 2 of Alice in Borderland premiered on Netflix in December 2022 and became Japan’s most-watched title ever, surpassing even anime series.
The show made it to the Top 10 list in over 90 countries and claimed the No. 1 spot in 17 of them. It amassed an astonishing 200 million viewing hours worldwide. Following the confirmation, Netflix dropped a teaser on social media.
The post features ten playing cards, each containing a clue about what’s to come. Fans cracked the code to reveal the message, “alice three.” Moreover, a hint of Joker’s face in the backdrop has sparked excitement for the character’s arrival in the upcoming season.
Season 3 plot details
At the end of Alice in Borderland Season 2 on Netflix, the characters learn that the essence of life is simply living. It followed the original manga’s conclusion and ended Arisu’s journey in Borderland.
However, the finale ended on a cliffhanger with a gust of wind scattering all the playing cards on a table except for The Joker. Given that the manga has two spinoffs, director Shinsuke Sato could work out an exciting return to the Borderland universe.
The spinoff Alice on Border Road introduces new characters like Arisu, with a mysterious card and no memory. Alice in Borderland Retry features Arisu returning to the deadly world to win a specific game. The latter is most likely to be adapted for Season 3.
Arisu and Usagi are confirmed to return for Netflix’s Alice in Borderland Season 3, played by Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya, respectively. Aya Asahina, Nijirô Murakami, and Ayaka Miyoshi will also return as Kuina, Chishiya, and Ann after surviving Season 2’s games.
Who is the Joker in Alice in Borderland?
The Joker remains a mystery, just like the cliffhanger from Alice in Borderland Season 2. To understand who this is, let’s take a look at the character from the manga series of the same name by Haro Aso.
In the original manga, the Joker card doesn’t appear in any of the games within Borderland. However, after Arisu wins the final Queen of Hearts game, Borderland residents must decide between staying in this realm or returning to the real world.
Arisu decides to leave Borderland along with other key characters like Usagi. However, he encounters Joker, who is Borderland’s equivalent of Charon, the ferryman of the dead in Greek mythology. He escorts those who leave Borderland back to the real world.
Why is Alice in Borderland so famous?
Alice in Borderland is an excellent example of how to adapt manga or anime into a live-action Netflix series. The streaming giant recently did the same with One Piece, which has become a worldwide phenomenon.
The series adaptation stays true to its manga source material, as we saw how Season 2 ended on a satisfying note. Arisu’s ending reflected the exact essence of the character’s journey in the original manga.
Joker’s arrival in Alice in Borderland Season 3 will take the show to new heights on Netflix. With two spinoffs left to explore, it will be interesting to see how the showrunners will take it forward.
