Red Dead Redemption Remastered: Nintendo Switch Port | Is it worth $50?

Rockstar’s highly rated western classic Red Dead Redemption is back with its remastered port for the Nintendo Switch. While many fans are excited to try it on the handheld, others are put off by the $50 price tag for a 10+ years old video game. In this article, we will explore a few factors that would help you decide whether you should buy the game or not. But before proceeding forward, have a look at the new announcement trailer.

What is Red Dead Redemption Remastered?

  • Red Dead Redemption is a third-person open-world title that tells the story of protagonist John Marston. You fill the shoes of the rowdy cowboy and play within a fictionalized setting of the wild west in 1911.
  • You advance through a series of conflicts, revenge, and lastly, redemption across the roughly 35-hour-long compelling journey. The game has received numerous critical acclamations from a series of reputed outlets and has frequently appeared throughout the list of the best video games released in 2010.

  • It has received an equal amount of love and appreciation from its player base as well. It was succeeded by Red Dead Redemption 2, which is considered one of the greatest games ever made.
  • Red Dead Redemption was originally released for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 back in 2010. Surprisingly, it remains a console exclusive that never got a port to PC.

Red Dead Redemption Switch Port

  • Red Dead Redemption for the Nintendo Switch arrived on 17th August 2023. From the videos comparing the graphics between various platforms, we can say that it certainly looks good on the handheld.
  • The lighting and shading condition has been improved with a warmer tone for an enhanced visual appeal. However, it did not deliver a massive overhaul and still retains the core feel of the original game.
  • Players were skeptical of this move after the poor reception of GTA: Trilogy’s Definitive Edition. We will know if the Switch port has a similar game-breaking bug problem only after a few days.
  • It is locked in 30 FPS, and while it is not an issue for the Switch, the PS4 and the PS5 users are unhappy about it.
  • Since it is a very old game, we can expect it to run on the Switch without a hiccup. It should perform well enough on the handheld from a functional standpoint.

How to Get It

  • You should be able to purchase the game from Nintendo’s digital shop, My Nintendo Store, for $49.99. The game also includes the DLC pack called Undead Nightmare.
  • You will be able to get a physical disc version of it when it releases on October 13, 2023.

Conclusion

The Nintendo Switch port is a great option to play Red Dead Redemption for the first time. However, it is not worth picking up as a collection due to its high asking price of about $50. Half of that price would be justifiable, but the current cost is too much for such an old game.

On the other hand, if you want to experience the game for the first time, you might consider buying it. The price tag still remains quite steep, but Red Dead Redemption is one of the best games you will ever play. Considering that factor, you should not regret spending the amount in exchange for the experience.
