Loki Season 2: Is OB Older Than The TVA?

Loki Season 2 has introduced us to a fresh ensemble of characters, and one individual who has swiftly captured the hearts of fans is Ouroboros aka OB, a TVA employee portrayed by Ke Huy Quan, known for his role in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

OB is the lone operator of the TVA’s Repairs and Advancement Department, a role he has held for centuries. In the second season, he is initially introduced as he aids Loki and Mobius and quickly finds the solution to the God of Mischief’s time-slipping issue. The character is portrayed as clever yet unassuming, and some viewers speculate that there may be more to him beneath the surface, particularly focusing on his choice to wear glasses.

Why Does OB Wear Glasses?

The presence of glasses on OB’s character has led some fans to ponder its significance. One Reddit theory points out that within the TVA, time remains static, and nobody ages. Consequently, eyeglasses shouldn’t be necessary, unless individuals wore them prior to entering the TVA or suffered some eye-related injury. This raises questions about why Quan’s character needs glasses in the “present” but not in the “past,” as seen in the premiere episode when Loki “time-slips” to meet a younger OB.

“The more I think about it, the more I think the glasses are a weird detail in general,” the Redditor continued. They questioned the necessity of eyeglasses in an environment where aging doesn’t occur. The user also considered the possibility that the glasses might serve as a visual cue to distinguish between past and present versions of Ouroboros during certain scenes.

Is OB a Variant of Another Loki Season 2 Character?

Like most of the characters in Loki Season 2, OB is based on a comic book character who is connected to the TVA. In the comics, Mr. Ouroboros is actually the future version of Mr. Paradox, who got a gender switch in the series as Katie Dickie’s General Dox. Since the character is still alive (sort of) after Dox’s shocking death, they could be two separate characters in the series. In addition to that, OB could be revealed to have a larger role to play in saving the TVA, and it may have been hinted at in his choice to wear a pair of glasses.

“Maybe he’s Clark Kenting, trying to seem weak and unassuming,” the Reddit theory purports. Maybe his entire image was chosen to disarm people, as he is not an imposing or intimidating character in his current form.” It is also noted that Loki Season 2 could highlight Ke Huy Quan’s martial arts skills, something that he has already confirmed as a stunt director in the first X-Men film.

It would certainly make sense for Loki Season 2 to give Ke Huy Quan something more to do in the series. After all, it was confirmed that he was hand-picked for the role by Marvel boss Kevin Feige.

The enigma surrounding Ouroboros’ eyewear adds an intriguing layer to his character and sparks curiosity among fans about whether it holds any hidden meaning or simply serves a practical purpose in the context of the show. As the series progresses, viewers are left to ponder whether the glasses are a clue to a deeper storyline or merely a visual device for storytelling. Either way, the truth could be revealed in the last two episodes of Loki Season 2.
